Definitions of "Deseo"

The Spanish word "deseo" is most often translated as "desire," but in truth deseo can have many different definitions and implications. Here are just a few of the feelings that deseo is commonly used to represent.

Desire

As previously mentioned, deseo is usually interpreted as the word desire. While desire may have slightly different connotations, in this case the one that it most closely relates to is amorous desire, a romantic longing for someone to whom you are attracted.

Want

Another definition of deseo is to want. Once again, wanting can mean many different things just like deseo can, but when the two are used interchangeably it is in reference to a material want. For example, if your use of deseo was synonymous with want, then you would use it in reference to expensive clothing, a sports car or a large and elegant home.

Wish

Deseo, when used in its tamest form, refers to an earnest wish for something. That could mean a platonic longing for a friend or the fervent hope that something good is going to happen like getting a new job or safely delivering your baby.

Willingness

Proving just how complex a word deseo is, it can also mean a willingness to do something. This use of deseo implies something positive and honest about the person it is used in reference to - along the same lines as saying the person has a good intention or an honorable heart.

Deseo may seem like a small and simple word, but in truth it has many nuances. When used in different ways, deseo can mean a number of things including desire, want, wish and willingness.
